Barbara Howard, Director from the Riverside County Office of Education, presented a plaque at the Temecula Valley Unified School District Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 to Coach Robbie Robinson of Great Oak High School and a handful of student-athletes representing the Wolfpack varsity football team.

“This is the Academic Achievement Award,” said Howard, “presented to the football team with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in all of Riverside County.” There are 63 public high schools in Riverside County. This is the second time Great Oak has won the award in the last three years.

“It’s always a great honor to be recognized for your academics, especially as a team award,” said senior and team captain Anthony Bandong, who earned a 4.0 GPA last semester. Bandong was a sophomore on the varsity team when they won the prestigious award in 2012. The other student-athletes present represented some of this year’s top GPA earners.

The Great Oak football team had ten players with GPA’s of 4.0 or better, including one player – Alex Gonzalez — with a GPA of 4.83. Gonzalez was not there for the presentation; he was home working on a school project.

“We’re student-athletes,” said Robinson, “And we emphasize that at Great Oak.” Robinson’s system included checking grades four times each week during the season. Robinson credited his father, a retired principal, as a key component of the system; he voluntarily drove 160 miles once a week to run the team study hall.

Robinson also credited the kids and their parents, “They work hard. They’re great kids from great families and we’re blessed to be here.”

In addition to the team plaque, the players each receive special patches for their letterman’s jackets signifying their collective achievement.
