Mom, Child Struck by SUV Outside Murrieta School

MURRIETA – A mother and child were struck — but not hurt — by a slow-moving SUV outside a Murrieta school today when they attempted to cross the street without using a designated crosswalk, authorities said.

The woman and youth, who is a seventh-grader at Shivela Middle School, were going east to west in the 24500 block of Lincoln Avenue when the accident happened about 8:50 a.m., according to Murrieta police Sgt. Jay Froboese.

He said the pair were trying to get to the campus’ main entrance but failed to stay within the two designated crosswalks — both staffed by crossing guards — at the time.

A motorist in a Chevrolet Tahoe was exiting the school parking lot in heavy traffic, going about 5-10 mph, and bumped into the pedestrians, according to the sergeant.

A Murrieta police motorcycle officer was about 200 feet away from the scene and arrived within seconds.

”The driver did not see them prior to the collision,” Froboese said. ”There were several witnesses that came forward … and the pedestrians were deemed to be at fault for crossing mid-block, outside of the established and manned crosswalks.”

According to Froboese, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of using marked crosswalks and taking basic precautions while on public rights-of-way.

Mother should be charged with child endangerment. Parents teach their kids every day how to do things right (and sometimes wrong) — she is fortunate the accident wasn’t worse.
